Hi

Can anyone explain me the difference between CD drive and VCD player ? Can I paly VCD in CD drive ? Am I likely to damage my VCD if I play it in CD drive ?

Hi,

To put it simple:

VCD = VHS on CD

As long as you have a VCD player you should be able to watch it on your computer. You can download some free of the net. I'm not sure if Windows Media Player can handle VCD's. Nothing at all will happen to your VCD's if you ise them in you CDROM drive.

Your PC CDROM drive should have no problems reading a VCD, though you need a VCD software player to view the movies inside the disk.

You can also use Media Player (from Windows) but you need to know where to look for the .DAT files to play.

If you are referring to a normal CD player, I would not recommend it at all. Older CD players will try to interpret the video data as a audio stream signal and the result could be a high pitched squeaks which could damage your hearing or speakers.

VCD looks better than VHS alright!

Actually for some scenes (fast moving or dark scenes), you will find original/first master VHS tapes to be substantially better. For those scenes, the VCDs tend to become VERY grainy.

I agree. VCD resolutions aren't better than VHS tapes. Compare a dubbed tape (brand new tape I mean) from a DVD and a VCD which was encoded from DVD. The tape will look sharper.
