The decrease in business orders and a less-than-rosy economy outlook forecast has indicated that Singapore economic is experiencing the economy slowdown now.
Many company managements have implemented various measures to ensure their costs are stay in check and the company can stay afloat: These are some of the measures observed:
1. Putting recruitment on hold
2. Downsizing operation
3. Cutting down staffing levels by retrenchment
4. Moderating pay increments and bonuses
5. Employ young and cheap new professional to replace the senior staff
Last week, a group of NTU 3rd-year Civil Engineering students told me that some of their senior has recently settle down for a $1,800 job after graduation; just see how fast is the local companies react to this economy downturn.
Be ready to react if you are one of this new graduates looking for job.

Though i m not a fresh grad, i think my annual package is gonna be affected as there won't b bonuses this yr.

Putting recruitment on hold
In most big organisations, even there's a severe shortage of employees in certain departments, none of the bosses dare to send requests for external recruitment. They were too afraid that management will take a closer look at their department & realise that they aren't contributing much hence axed the HOD. This results in a strain in manpower which affects the quality of work.

Have u tried applying for a job to software companies like Novasprint, Stoneforest etc. where they need software writers?

*pat pat*

Frankly, I find that job agencies are quite useless. They don't really care about what you want, they are more interested in what they want, ie to match you off as soon as possible. I just had a chat with this HR consultant and she said this "we have lots of resumes, but none very useful." I felt *so* great after that. To be fair, their clients look for very specific skills - eg experience in networks in the petrol-chem industry only (which is why they go to job agencies rather than advertise openly).

Try going to the company websites direct. More useful.

not really if the companies do not update their website...there are some where the opening has been there since july 2000... ...

anyway, u might want to try those recruitment companies at a higher-level than those local agencies...large companies usually go to recruitment companies that are larger...

currently, the situation is really bad...i would suggest u consider getting a contract position for abt 1-2yrs contract period...who knows when the market gets better, they would want to convert u to a perm position if u r good...

For fresh grad, my advice is to apply direct to employers.
For job hoppers, agency can be rather useful. I heard that they're keen in 'matching' & ensure that your resume get to the right person (means it will be read & not thrown away) & will even try to give interview tips. They can even be morale booster!
