is it a waste of money?
should it get more funding?
imho, they should pour a lot more money into it at the expense of social programs and military spending.

I think in long run, we need that, if we want to explore rhe universe (not in our generation though).
I won't mind using most of the military spending on it though, as more military spending usually just make this world, (but some of the advance in military service is necessary though, like internet was originated from military also)

Oh dear, visions of Star Trek spring to mind...
To me, space program is a good thing - I'm thinking along the lines of finding life on other planets, finding how other planets evolved to learn more about ourselves and finding other potential worlds to inhabit should we one day destroy ourselves (now visions of Armageddon and Deep Impact spring to mind...I think I should stop watching so many movies... )
IMHO, money is better spent on the space program than on an arms race.

well it's no fun if we all agree
but what's more important - space programs or social programs?
if, hypothetically, we had a $100 billion surplus, do we make more homeless shelters or send more probes into space?

Space programs. I'd rather think of the good of the future generations than squander on the lost present generation.

That shows that the earth is already overpopulated, and we should start exploring space to find new planets to pollute and destroy..ahem..I mean inhabitate them all

In my opinion, we should spend on the space program, not nessecarily on probes, but possibly putting a colony on the moon, mars, or floating aroud in orbit.

i somehow think that the space program's progress has been slowed down a lot. There doesnt seem to be any major developments in these few years?

The next big mile stone we need to reach as a civilization is to put poeple on mars, in my opinion, sending poeple to mars should be a top priority...even if they dont come back(ie colony), because getting there is the easy part its the back part that causes problems.
And on the social side of things we could create a better society on the red planet, and then have something to model earth after
