yeah I concur. the US is big country, there are good places and bad places. with the exception of a few select suburbs in the giant cities, however, most of it is really nice and safe.

going thru the thread....one question comes to mind.
how does one define 'crowded'?
is it cos one does not have space to stand on the MRT?
not able to buy a big house, drive a big car?
or is it because not everyone can afford to buy landed property?
or is it that one is not able to find a job cos most of the jobs available on the market are either too 'dirty' in nature or too little pay?
how does one define 'crowded'?

crowded /adj/ : overfilled or compacted or concentrated; "a crowded theater"; "a crowded program"; "crowded trains"; "a young mother's crowded days" [ant: uncrowded]

maybe you did not get my meaning when i asked for the definition of 'crowded. the topic asked us if we think singapore is 'crowded' ? so, ah gong is asking, how does one define 'crowded' when refering to 'singapore being crowded'.
but if you are basing your arguments on that, singapore is not crowded at all cos we still have space to walk , plenty of space to move about.
shopping centers instead of more HDB are still sprouting out at the hearts of town, bigger car models are still introduced into singapore, more foriegn talent is being sought...so, in that sense,
how can one classify singapore as crowded?
maybe dragon would like to clarify this

well most subjective things are usually defined by their peers. so yes, SG is technically overcrowded.

as I said before, Singapore has a very high population density compared to it's peers (the rest of the world).

paiseh, paiseh, haven't looked into this thread for a while. Didn't know my 'presence' is called for.
Anyway, my "definition" of 'crowded' is the intuitive one lah, the one most people will understand it to mean, ie, too many people on this small piece of land lah, can be measured in terms of capita per sq metre. But that's just statistics. I'm commenting more on my own experience - crowded trains, crowded hawker centres, crowded shopping malls, crowded libraries etc. Even our schools and tertiary institutes are over-populated. You just feel there are too many people.
With due respect though, I cannot see how the others like "can't buy house or car" or landed property" and "about jobs paying low or dirty" could possibly be definitions of 'crowded'.

so, going by Dragon's definition of crowded, you feel singapore is crowded "8x."
just out of curiosity, how crowded would you say singapore is if you go by my definition rather than Dragon's?

going by dragon's definition, you can say that singapore is crowded, cos there is not much chances of standing on your own if you do not have the necessary connections or financial backing.
going by your definition, i say, singapore ain't crowded as you say, cos ah gong still stretch out his arms and not hit the next fella

according to my definition (see above), what i said goes hand in hand with what dragon said (see below).

well, your definition of singapore is 'crowded trains, crowded hawker centres, crowded shopping malls, crowded libraries etc. Even our schools and tertiary institutes are over-populated.'
so in that sense, i personally feel that opportunities limitations is what makes one feel that it is crowded too
based on AlterEgo's dictionary definition, he he...it is more like stretching out the arms and hitting the next fellow ALL the time
that is why...he he.
guess the old man is reading the wrong things again
*damn...gotta get a new optician*
