More S'poreans entering porn sites, staying longer
Professionals outnumber students, making up half of the 2,200 hooked on cybersex here, a survey found

MORE people here are turning to cybersex and they are spending more time on it, said a survey by Internet measurement company NetValue.

Of the more than 5,500 registered Internet users tracked in a March study, professionals seem to be the most hooked on porn. Every other porn site visitor was a professional, an executive, a manager or a businessman.

In Singapore, this group outnumbers students as porn surfers.

In South Korea, Hongkong and Taiwan - the other three places studied - students were the most avid porn surfers.

It could be that Singaporean executives, being more Internet-savvy and more proficient in English, are catching on to the Internet, said NetValue's sales director Alan Choo.

He said: 'Given the strict law of enforcement against all sorts of vices, the Internet offers a convenient source to other unorthodox materials.

'Of course, one of them is pornographic content.'

All the users studied had tracking devices installed on their computers, and in March, nearly four in 10 users had logged on to a pornographic site.

This is about 5 per cent higher than a year ago.

A similar survey was done in March last year.

Findings were collated from registered users who had to confirm their pre-registered personal details whenever they logged on.

It found that of those who did surf porn sites, more were lingering, spending about an hour on average, when they had spent about 45 minutes in February.

This rising trend was seen in all four places studied, with surfers in Taiwan spending the longest time - 1 hr 28 min - on average.

Dr Jack Loo, NetValue's president for Asia, said the firm does not track what surfers do at these sites, but they could be spending time on videos, chat-rooms, e-mail and newsletters.

Of the 2,200 people in the Singapore sample who visited porn sites, half were professionals, executives, managerial staff or businessmen.

Other workers, whether white or blue-collar, made up 16 per cent, and 30 per cent were students.

The others included retirees and those who stayed at home or were not working.
