Combined with nearly $2.5 million brought in by other television and radio stations through today, the total raised for victims of Tropical Storm Allison was nearly $6 million.

The Spirit of Texas drive began Sunday when the Houston Chronicle/Hearst Corp. and the Belo Corp./KHOU-TV joined forces to help fund the American Red Cross’ massive relief effort.

KPRC (Channel 2) received pledges totaling $2.1 million during an all-day telethon Monday on behalf of the American Red Cross.

KRIV (Channel 26) received a $250,000 pledge from former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman, which was forwarded to the Red Cross.

KTMD (Channel 48), in conjunction with radio stations KLTN (102.9 FM), KOVE (110.7 FM) and KLAT (1010 AM), collected $15,000 during drives Monday and Tuesday and filled two tractor-trailers with clothing that will go to the Red Cross.

KXLN (Channel 45), along with radio stations KQQK (106.5 FM) and KXYZ (1320 AM), filled a tractor-trailer and three moving vans with canned food, baby formula, water, diapers and toiletries. The stations will continue their charity drive today at Gallery Furniture.

KRBE (104.1 FM) collected $43,000, which included a $25,000 check from Pennzoil.

Clear Channel Communications, which owns several stations including KKRW (93.7 FM) and KTBZ (94.5 FM), reported collecting more than $30,000 in donations and 50 to 60 truckloads of supplies.

In addition to nearly $3.2 million raised Monday, businesses and organizations on Tuesday contributed another $353,000, including $100,000 from Calpine Corp.

The United Space Alliance donated $30,000, while BMC Software, Houston Golf Association and Sears, Roebuck and Co. each donated $25,000.

Baker Hughes and Redstone Companies each gave $20,000.

The telephone bank that raised $248,000 from individuals Monday was not operating Tuesday.

Those wishing to donate may mail contributions to the Houston Chronicle/KHOU-TV “Spirit of Texas Flood Relief Drive” in care of the Greater Houston Chapter of the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 201014, Houston, Texas 77216-1014.
