man oh man, and ah gong have not even pak tor enough!!!

HOT STORY
Movie tickets hiked by 50 cents
THE last increase was just seven months ago.
And now, movie ticket prices are going up again.

Starting this Thursday, Eng Wah, Golden Village, Shaw and United Artists - members of the Cinematograph Film Exhibitors' Association - will raise their ticket prices by 50 cents.

Last February, weekday ticket prices - Monday to Thursday (before 5pm) - cost just $5.

That was raised to $6 in October. Now, it's $6.50.

For admissions on Thursdays (after 5pm), Fridays (before 5pm) and eve of public holidays (that is not a Saturday or Sunday), tickets now cost $7.50.

While that for Fridays (after 5pm), weekends and public holidays will increase from $8 to $8.50.

And, though senior citizen concessions remain at $3.50, weekday $2 reductions introduced last February have been axed.

Previous price hikes were blamed on fewer moviegoers (down from 14,774 in 1999 to 13,440 last year), mounting costs, smaller tax rebates, pirated VCDs and the Internet.

No reasons have been given as yet for the price hike this time, though some moviegoers wonder whether it is a good move.

Like Ms Jeanne Chua, 27, who usually watches movies on weekends.

She told The New Paper: "Fifty cents might not be much, but with cinema attendance dropping and more people buying VCDs, higher ticket prices certainly won't help to attract more moviegoers."

They're very clever, they make it cheap so as to get us hooked. Then, they raise prices.
- Ms Pris Teo, an accounts manager

give it another half a year, going on a week day will be costing almost as much as going on a week end liow
if that is the case, renting a movie would be much cheaper
sigh...and they say the economy is getting better, how come instead of decreasing the price to attract more people, they are increasing the prices instead?

when we are talking about high cost of maintainance, how come the cinemas never thought of closing down some of the less used/frequented locations?
places like woodlands, prince, sembawang, just to name a few
any idea why there is an increase this time round? haven't been following the news, maybe ah gong missed some articles that pre-empted this move to increase prices again

think about this ...
8.50 cents ... go into a cinema crowded and cold ...

if 5 persons go = 8.50 * 5 = 42.50
roughly about the price of a DVD ... myself i buy a DVD n ask my friends to come n watch ... with home surround theather ... isn't that better ?

Good point, instead of blaming us all the time, they should stop opening so many screens. After all, during the recession in the 80s, the closed down a lot of screens, and during the boom, they created the idea of multi-cineplexes, so now shouldln't they close screens instead? Instead of stopping piracy, they are promoting it!

agree
in australia it cost more $10
n ppl still flock to the movies

tell me...wat else can a couple do in boring spore cept to go watch movies??!

they really should close down those run down neighbourhood theatres to reduce the number.

i doubt the increase in price will deter movie goers from catching a show still
n they, the cinemas chain organisations, know it!

darn it, and we, the consumers are strong-armed into paying more again

it will not deter movie goers from going, but it will sure pack a punch in the pockets, especially if you are going during the week ends (which is usually the only time a working person is free)

but up till now there is no reasons given for the increase.
if they tell me it is becos of higher maintainence, i do not agree...
electricity prices has dropped, pay for part-time has remained the same since the down turn ($4-4.5/h).

hmm...

they do?!?
wow *ponders*
but the pay/salaries given to people there is better than those in singapore, can i safely say that? so, working on the equation (income vs expenditure), it sort of balances out

here, pay freeze, cost of everything increase, the equation of consumer (income vs expenditure) is sort of tipped towards one side now

i kinda agree there
probably why there are so many raids these days, cos they need to stamp out pricy inorder to 'force' us into going to movies

but home theater is never as solid as the THX systems of the big screens
imagine watching 'saving private ryan' on the small screen compared to the big screen. there is such a big difference in the effect and the sounds. even sitting there in front of the screen, the feeling is different.

some shows simply cannot be watched on the small screens
the up coming 'pearl harbour' is a good example

Price of producing the movie increase > price of license increase > price of tickets increase.

precisely what i mean, if they are having trouble maintaining all 10 cinemas, why not close down a few of those cinemas?
why fight to maintain it by increasing the ticket price?

for all you know, after the increase in prices, it would not be six people watching a movie, but much MUCH less

wonder what sort of economics they learn to run business

If the movies are good, I can accept the price for $10-12. I know it's kind of burden to some families if they go altogether.

things are like that, if you are already paying one price, and get used to it, once increase sure got people gripe bout it.
the businesses in singapore knows singaporeans are afraid of red-tape, so, after some noise, they will just tone down and accept it
that is why we are always 'forced' into uncessary price increases
a few voices is not enough to get any actions done.
if for one month, all singaporeans, and i mean ALL, boycott all cinemas, then they will feel the pinch

how many are actually willing to do that?
just how many?

agree, I don't mind to pay $10-12 if it's good too. However, I might have second thoughts if i bring my family along. Such a price is equivalent to a family high-tea session.

Also, I might even pay a little more premium to catch a dance performance or concert. 'Ballet Under the Stars' cost only $15 at fort canning.. i personally think that these r more value for money

I m just wondering is it b'cos Singapore is promoting arts & we've more of such overseas group performing here, therefore it is a form of competition for cinemas & this might have affected ticket sales

also, SCV & Channel U also show very recent movies nowadays
