But practically, as a Singaporean, i won't buy this idea as we've got to compromise pay part time job probably will not make up the remaining 50% of pay

not only HP...HP is retrenching 3000 management positions worldwide too......

companies like Sun, Agilent, etc, do that too...mostly US companies have this taking a force leaved solution...

the problem is companies have to cut a lot of costs to justify to their shareholders that they are still making money...see the drift..??..revenue goes down...the only way to justify to shareholders that they are still making money is to cut the costs...

taking a forced leave solution can only cut so much costs...if the revenue drops a lot, other than this forced leave solution, there are other solutions like pay cut, retrenchment...etc...all these add up to a lot of money 'saved'...

as for the opinion on clinching to your jobs during bad times, logically speaking it would be so depending on your job nature...if your job nature is not needed elsewhere...then you would clinch to it...but if the nature is such that other companies want you, then you would have a job...

eg...in this downturn, not all companies fared badly...granted most companies do fare badly, but there are still companies recruiting, even in the IT/Electronics industry...and if you are good, your current company should be thinking of ways to retain you rather than retrench you......

Agree u've got a valid point. The word is "job nature". May I add on "market value of oneself"? This downturn & retrenchment news really make me think that career planning is very important. When we are young, we should plan our career progression & increase our marketibility by gaining experience in the various areas relating to the industry, instead of just stick on to an area of specialisation. As we grow old, if we only specialise in one thing & nothing else, chances for us to be axed is high.

At first they will spread rumours thru all the working place ,secondly they will start to restructure their management frequenly and then the employee will start to suffer for their heavy workload which is assign from top .....................and so on the staff will resign one by one automatically .......
sigh.......

It's a viscious cycle! Firstly, the rumours are to signal that the management is doing something. The rationale why bosses assign work/projects is to safeguard their own rice bowl so that they've got something to report during the next meeting. Then some small fry also try playing tachi so that they'll appear as not the one who is incompetent
Goodness, what kind of world is this?

other than job nature and market value (which is the foundation), u might want to consider serious networking...from what i understand, even in this current downturn, headhunters are still out in full force and i heard of a number of friends who got headhunted......

being headhunted is better than having to find a job only when u need one...if headhunters know abt u, be rest assured that if news of u being retrenched is out and u are really good in ur profession, they will definitely call u, even before u leave......
