Here's another story I came across, I thought I might share. http://www.technologyreview.com/magazine/jun01/hawley.asp
quote: Let's focus on the blind/deaf question. Genius overcomes many difficulties. As evidence, we have the pantheon of blind and deaf artists, ranging from Beethoven to Goya to Milton to Ray Charles. According to neuropsychologist and author Oliver Sacks (in his book Seeing Voices), whether it's better to be blind or deaf depends on how old you are. For an adult, blindness and deafness are about equally problematic. But for a child, there is no question: it's better to be blind. Anyone who has had the opportunity to teach a deaf child knows this. Hearing is the primary channel through which we receive language, and all of those incoming words downloaded into our brains carry a wealth of emotional and cognitive apparatus that structures and empowers our imagination. Language is the mind's opposable thumb.

maybe it's just me but I'd choose to be deaf. I consider my eyes my primary sense, and I can't live without them. I could adapt and remain independent without my ears.

I'd rather be deaf. It is the eyes that open you to the world...unless you're a musician

agreed...the physical disadvantages of being blind vastly outweigh those of being deaf

me rather be deaf than blind
like wat the rest mentioned, sight is really hard to replace...one can still communicate thru sign language, lip reading, etc.
can even communicate via e-mails n letters!
ps: me play piano, but hor, I still prefer to be deaf...hee hee

i would choose deaf only becos if im deaf i still can see words and that makes it easy to chat on irc. lol. cant hear anything nvm anyway. Some peace and quiet from the noise pollution of this world is good.
But if i were to choose blindness, the reason would be, i never want to see someone i care about cry and can never know whats wrong. You cant hear their words if u are deaf instead of blind and they will never be willing to write out why they are sad. Faces can hide their feelings but spoken words can never hide the feelings when something bad happens.

seriously, given a choice? neither would i want to be
the senses always compliment each other
unless taken by unforseen circumstances, rather not be blind or deaf

At first I was almost certain that I'd rather be deaf than blind.
However, after some research, it appears 100% of deaf & blind people who could once see & hear, all say if they could have only one sense restored, it would be hearing.
Even though almost all of us will say "sight" at first thought, we have to accept that the people actually experiencing this situation, must have a better understanding than we who are merely imagining how it would be.
Even though from my perspective it's difficult to understand, I have to accept that if I were made deaf & blind that my preference if given a choice would the same as everyone in that situation & that I'd also come to prefer my hearing restored over my eyes.
