They dare to create new trends and such cause their parents probably don't have that much restrictions on them. Its a chain reaction. They think of something new, they create new trends, their creativity keeps on going.
Japanese/Koreans/HK have a rich history of imitation and reverse engineering. For Japan ever since the Meiji era when they opened up their doors to the world, they have been unashamedly learning and adopting the best practices of the West, even importing Western teachers to teach in their schools, and concentrating their education on engineering and the hard sciences. Same thing happened post-War. Their main comparative advantage was their cheap labour. Was it creativity and invention? No, it was re-engineering and smart adaptation that was the source of their success. It is only in the 80s and 90s where they started to build on their creativity after they lost their competitive edge from cheap labour to countries like China. Same cycle happened in Korea.
Even today, Japan is still a nation of imitators - blonde hair, Western-style music, ang mo cartoons...West wannabes. The big difference between them and West-wannabes is that they dare to adapt (historically their strong point) to make it Jap-ish and distinctively Japanese. Rebellion or individuality?

is creativity subjective ? i think so.
what is "creative" to one might not be to another.
can SG-eans be more creative ? yes. but not as a nationwide thing
what does it take ? out of the box thinking. which requires more PERSONAL experiences not fed to you. Do things not the norm norm. (double norm intended)
For me creative in a certain aspect can be easily shown.
How the person answers some questions. (can cite any examples)
nice thread though. picked up some tidbits here and there.

creativity depends on the environment...but i dun believe that a less stressful environment will generate more creativity...it is the freedom u are given to express yourself...
i dun think it is correct to just compare country by country, eg. singapore and japan...
the reason is the population in japan is very much more than that of singapore...for every creative japanese u see, there might be another 2 or 3 that are not that creative...
i had worked with some japanese before...one of them was concerned not abt the school work of his children but more abt their thinking...he stresses on individualistic thinking in his children and he was concerned not by his son's school results but worries that his son is not being able to get a galfren...mind u, his son was only abt 12 years old...
but there were 2 - 3 others that gave up their overseas posting so that their children can go back to japan and study and get good results and thus compete with the rest of the other children...following the norm...
granted the society is japan is stressful but it is in other sense...they push their children in results when they are young but if the child shows progress in other fields like sports, they allow them to concentrate on carving out a career in sports...if they show promise in studies, they allow the child to concentrate on their studies...
it is is liberty or ability to let the children concentrate on their strong points that differs from singapore...and as all of us know...if u are doing what u are strong in and doing what u like, u can be very creative and motivated... ...

Can Singaporeans ever be more creative than others?
Oh yes we can..BUT (refer to everything that has been mentioned above..etc)..
I feel that stress is one major problem in making Singaporean less creative...we are just too worn out to bother...
