Other than sharing the joy of the newly wed couple, to most of us, it's:
1.Catch up with old friends, a costly way though
2.Networking
3.Check out which hotel is more value for money
4.To see how small the world is, very often, we meet common friends whom we did not expect

I beg to differ.
It's a total waste of time. And totally pretensious as well.
Imagine this:
The bride and bridegroom gets most of the people and relatives they know to attend. But how many of these people do they actually know and have talked more than half-an hour with? Especially the relatives. You have to invite those long forgotten relatives whom you have not seen for years and whom you will probably never see again to the dinner. And then everybody sits around and eat while the couple walk around taking photos. Where got time to speak to everyone?
I would prefer a more intimate gathering of probably less than 10 people and just talk and eat. May have to do it lots of times over a long period, but hey, at least you get to communicate with each other rather then hello, eat, take photo, shake hand, bye.
Crap. This is the year 2001. There is no need to have a wedding banquet.

Actually, it depends on how close u r with the bride & groom & also the gang of common friends that u have. If it's a close gang, that'll be an event that most will look forward to. If it's just some 'person that u know' & invited u for the sake of inviting, then, it could be quite undesirable.
