Canopus Spectra 2500 - Part 3

Software & Utilities Bundle
I was told that there would be no games bundled in the retail Spectra, and I support this because I would rather that the price be lower than have it bundled with games that I might not even play. I don't want to spend that kind of extra money.

So, no game bundle. But you can still expect the same top-notched software utilities to come with the Spectra.

Display Properties Panel

Canopus has adopted the more orderly implementation of the tabs for the display properties settings. You won't see 10 tabs glaring at you all at once, but you have to access them through the "Advanced" settings.

Options Gamma Control
Advanced Options - D3D Advanced Options - OpenGL

You'll see tabs for you to change cursor colour, screen position, gamma and TV-Out settings. There is also an online User Manual accessible from the Spectra Options tab.

Things only gets more interesting as you go further into the nested dialog boxes... Under the "Advanced" section of the Spectra Options tab, we were able to tweak Direct3D and OpenGL settings like VSYCH, mipmapping and anti-aliasing.

Quick Control

This is a gamer's friendly utility that was introduced with the Pure3D II card. It enables gamers to change gamma settings, TV-out brightness, contrast and the screen position on-the-fly via simple keystrokes.

QuickControl Key Sets
Customise Your Own Hotkeys

Quakers and other first-person shooters will like this feature best because there will be many occassions when you'll come to a corner too dark to spot enemies who might be sniping you. So with Quick Control, you'll just have to invoke your customised keystroke like CTRL-SHIFT-* to increase gamma, etc.

Refresh Utility

The refresh utility bundled will allow you to preset your prefered refresh rates for your desktop as well as for you Direct3D games. So you can (like the V2), set high refresh rates of 120Mhz for your game played at 800 X 600.

A handy tool for the first time, after finishing your setup, you'll probably find little reason to use it again.

Display Control

This utility is like QuickRes, enabling you to change your desktop resolution and colour depth on-the-fly. The Spectra's awesome capability presented me with a whopping 27 possible resolution types and colour depths, ranging from 640 X 480 (256 colours) to 1600 X 1200 (True Colour). The list extended from the bottom of my screen to the top!

Application Launcher, Total Cinema EX

Because of time constraints and since they are the same stuff from the WitchDoctor, I'll not dwell into these over here. Please refer to my WitchDoctor Review for a short description and screenshots of them.
